The history of Ping pong
Ping pong is a national sport in China. People who’s up to 70 years old or down to few years old can juts take a paddle and play. It’s known as the national ball. Ping pong originated in England in the late 19th century.
Tennis were all the rage in Europe in the nineteenth century, but it was limited by the space and weather, so the college students in England started to play tennis indoor. They use the study desk as the table, books as the net and the parchment as the paddles. It gradually evolved into table tennis, also called "Ping pong" . Ping pong become flourished in Europe and Asia in the early 20th century.
In 1904, a stationery store owner in Shanghai bought ten sets of Ping pong equipment abroad, and since then Ping pong was introduced into China. Before the founding of the People’s Republic of China, they had never won a world championship or even a medal. But after that, the new government was called upon people to do sports and strengthen fitness. So that’s why Ping pong is so popular in China.
In 1959, Rong Guotuan got China's first world champion in Ping pong, and this inspired Chinese people a lot. Ping pong developed in China from then on. And China emerged a large number of Ping pong world champions, such as: Liu Guoliang, the first in the history of China that both won Olympic Games and World Cup.
How good can Chinese people play ping pong?
